Monitoring Your Burn Rate: How to Monitor Grant Spending

This second session in the two-part series will focus on tracking grant spending through simple budget-to-actual monitoring. Attendees will learn how to avoid overspending or underutilizing funds and use Excel templates to monitor budgets, flag issues early, and identify proactive solutions.


Tonia Brown-Kinzel, GPC, Grant Compliance Manager, The Grant Plant

Tonia has worked or volunteered as a grant writer, grant reviewer, and grant maker since 1999. Her unique combination of experience yields special insights, helping Tonia earn nearly $20 million in grants throughout her career. She is the President of the Miami Valley Chapter of the Grant Professionals Association (GPA) and a member of the National Grant Management Association. She has also served on the GPA’s Professional Education Committee since 2021 and is a GPA Approved Trainer.

Hannah Peterson (Moderator), Program Development Director, American Indigenous Tourism Association

Hannah Peterson is the Program Development Director for American Indigenous Tourism Association, bringing to the role extensive experience in fundraising and program development. In her role as Program Development Director, Hannah works to advance the organization’s mission through strategic fundraising and program development. Hannah spent more than five years with J Murphy & Associates working as a consultant and grant writer and two years as grants manager for Urban Homeworks, Inc. For more than nine years, she worked as a paralegal working on business litigation, intellectual properties, worker’s compensation and insurance. She was raised in Anchorage, Alaska, and received a degree in English from the University of Washington, Seattle and a Master of Public Administration from Hamline University, Minnesota.
